Get the best stopover in Iceland!
A Stopover in Iceland is a great way to split your journey from North America to Europe (or vice-versa) adding a great vacation of one or more days in beautiful Iceland without paying any additional air fares.
The Stopover in Iceland can last one, two, three or more days and of course there are many things you can do to make the most of your time in Iceland, many day tours you can choose from to explore Iceland and enjoy its nature and culture.
Do not hesitate, ask questions:
Let‘s start with Reykjavik, the Northernmost capital of the world, a vibrant city brimming exciting events all year round. If you don‘t have a very long stopover and you are in Iceland only for a day, a walk in the downtown area, exploring Reykjavik‘s cafés and interesting buildings will be an excellent way to experience Iceland ‘s culture.
Icelanders love drinking coffee so after chilling in one of the many nice cafes downtown you can walk to Hallgrímskirkja, a big church in the city center with a very interesting shape. You might not like the church but the view of the downtown area from the top of the church tower is stunning, especially on a sunny day: Reykjavik will surprise you with all its colorful houses, the harbor, the ocean, and the mountains rising in the distance.
Harpa Concert Hall is also a must see while wondering downtown during your Icelandic Stopover. You can enjoy a concert, some good food at the cafe or just take a tour of this amazing building made of glass.
A visit in Reykjavik on your Stopover in Iceland is not complete without trying one of the famous Icelandic hot dogs, or pylsa in Icelandic. Made from Icelandic lamb, it is one of the country‘s favorite and most popular fast foods, perfect after a day sightseeing. Enjoy it the Icelandic way, with fresh onions, fried onions, ketchup, mustard, and remoulade.
Glacier lake – Vantajokull National Park
Of course, a Stopover in Iceland would not be complete without exploring some of the beautiful Icelandic nature and the options here are endless. Depending on what you like to do and how long your Stopover in Iceland is, you can choose from a wide range of great tours and exciting activities that will leave you with great memories. Icelandic nature really is beautiful and you will get a chance to explore volcanoes, glaciers, lava fields, see waterfalls, mountains and black sand beaches.
The popular Golden Circle Tour is definitely recommended during your Stopover.
You will see Strokkur geysir, the beautiful Gullfoss waterfall and Þingvellir National Park, where the world first parliament was held.
The South Coast is another quite popular tour during your Stopover in Iceland. On this tour, you will go all the way to Vik to enjoy the famous Icelandic black beaches and explore some of the most beautiful areas of the country.
Snaefellsnes Icelandic horses
If you have a longer Stopover in Iceland, I would recommend a day tour to Snæfellsnes, a peninsula in the west where you can see all that Iceland has to offer.
If you are feeling adventurous, you can book a tour to visit the inside of a volcano, or a man-made tunnel inside a glacier, or maybe a snorkeling tour in Silfra, where the North American and the European tectonic plates are drifting apart.
I would recommend a Horseback Riding Tour in the lava fields, where you will get to know more about the Icelandic nature and about the beautiful Icelandic horses. Also, a Whale Watching tour is a great opportunity to get close to these gentle giants in their own habitat.
If you come between September and March you should definitely join a Northern Lights tour and hopefully you will be lucky enough to get a chance to observe this spectacular show of lights in the Northern skies.
