Northern Lights Iceland
Northern Lights Boat Tours Iceland
One of the main reasons people decide to come to Iceland in the winter is to see the Northern Lights. If you are coming to Iceland in the winter and you are trying to catch the Lights, there are many tours you can choose from but a Boat Tour is certainly something different and a bit more special.
What to expect on a Northern Lights Boat Tour.
The Boat Tours leave from Reykjavik’s Old Harbor, most companies can pick you up from your hotel, sometimes with a small additional fee.
Once on the boat, your expert tour guide will tell you facts and legends about this fantastic phenomenon you will try to see with your own eyes.
As you sail away from the coast, you will get the chance to see Harpa Concert Hall, the Sun Voyager, the Peace Tower and Reykjavik itself from a different exciting angle.
A Northern Lights Boat Tour in Iceland will quietly take you across the bay and let you experience the lights in a very different atmosphere than the one you get when you take a bus tour; you will be on a boat in the middle of the ocean, away from the city, in darkness and silence and I guarantee that seeing the Lights like this will be very special and touching.
What do the Northern Lights look like?
Your experience tour guide will be on the look for the Northern Lights and inform you as soon as something starts moving in the sky.
What you usually see is a gray cloud that slowly develops into a show of green colors moving in the sky. If you are lucky, you will see some red and purple too, but green is the most common color to see. On the best days, the bright green Lights span across the sky, dancing back and forth for a long time, creating wonderful reflections in the ocean water and leaving you speechless under this amazing show of nature.
Taking Pictures of the Northern Lights.
If you want to try and take good pictures of Aurora Borealis, a Northern Lights Boat Tour might not be the right one for you. In order to take pictures of the Lights, you need a long exposure, which requires the camera to be steady and, since the boat is always moving with the waves on the ocean, it is very hard to keep it still, even with a tripod.
You can of course still take nice pictures of the Northern Lights if you are on a Northern Lights Boat Tour, and the guide will be able to help you with your camera settings, but you should know it will be hard to get super amazing shots…you will still get your cool pictures to show everyone on Instagram though!
What you need to know before you book a Boat Tour.
Before you book a Northern Lights Boat Tour, you should of course always keep in mind that the Lights are a natural phenomenon that is never guaranteed, unfortunately. These tours can always be canceled in case of bad weather conditions and, even with good conditions, you might not be lucky enough to see the any light. If you don’t see any Aurora, most tour companies give you a chance to join another tour for free and try your luck again
Why choose a Northern Lights Boat Tour
A Northern Lights tour by boat is certainly a great experience, different from the bus tours most people choose to take.
It is not too long, usually 2 to 3 hours and what I think is great about this tour is that you can stay inside the boat, wrapped around a blanket while your guide does the job of spotting the light…you can just wait for him to shout out that they are starting to show and then get out in the cold.
The other very good thing about this tour is that there are usually small groups and the sea is of course not crowded as many places on land can be.
Last but not least, it is great to just put your cameras down for a few hours sit down on a boat in the middle of the ocean in complete silence, relax and enjoy the lights up in the sky. It will be an experience you will never forget!
