If you are flying with Iceland Air or WOW Air, you have the great opportunity to visit Iceland on your way to your destination in Europe or North America without paying any additional air fares, just like having two vacations for one!
Your Stopover in Iceland can last one, two, three or more days and of course there are many things you can do to make the most of your time in Iceland, many day tours you can choose from to explore Iceland and enjoy its nature and culture.
I believe there are at least 10 reasons why you should add an Iceland Stopover to your vacation!
1. HARPA AND HALLGRÍMSKIRKJA
Harpa is Reykjavik’s music hall, a beautiful building made of glass from which you have an amazing view of the harbor and the bay. I love going there to see the sunset over the old harbor, and of course they are always hosting concerts and shows.
Hallgrímskirkja is Reykjavik’s famous big church on top of the hill downtown. Take some time to go to the top of the tower and enjoy the spectacular view of Reykjavik’s streets and colorful houses, especially nice in sunny weather.
2. THE ICELANDIC HOT-DOGS
Icelandic hot dogs are said to be the best in the world. Made mostly from Icelandic lamb, they are served with ketchup, a special mustard, both fresh and fried onions and remoulade. They are a perfect snack after your sightseeing around Reykjavik and they are definitely a must.
I have a friend who sometimes comes from New York City and the first thing she always wants to do as soon as she gets to Reykjavik is to eat a hot dog!
3. ICELAND’S AMAZING SCENERY
You have certainly seen pictures before and I can guarantee Icelandic landscapes do not need filters or photo-shop to look amazing because they already are.
Iceland’s glaciers, lava fields, hot springs, icebergs, volcanoes and colorful mountains will leave you speechless and will make you want to come back to this island over and over again.
4. THE GOLDEN CIRCLE
If you don’t mind the crowds, the popular Golden Circle is a great tour for a short Iceland Stopover. You will see some of Iceland’s best wonders: Geysir, beautiful Gullfoss and Thingvellir National Park, where the North American and the European tectonic plates are drifting apart. Popular but absolutely unmissable!

5. THE BLUE LAGOON
Not far from Keflavik International Airport, the Blue Lagoon is a great place where you can relax and bathe in Icelandic mineral-rich geothermal water. As this is a very touristy place, make sure you book your ticket in advance. If you want to add some sightseeing, I would recommend a Reykjanes Tour + Blue Lagoon https://icelandpremiumtours.is/iceland-tours/reykjanes-peninsula-and-blue-lagoon-private-tour/
6. JOIN SOME EXCITING ACTIVITES
Whether you want to hike on a glacier, go snowmobiling, snorkel between two continents, ride the famous Icelandic horses, visit a lava cave or even descend into a volcano, Iceland has it all.
There is a great range of fun activities to choose from to make your Iceland Stopover even more exciting and unforgettable. My favorite? I don’t have one, I think they are all great!
7. SEE SOME AMAZING WATERFALLS
Iceland has some of the most mesmerizing waterfalls you will ever see.
Gullfoss, Seljalandsfoss, Brúarfoss and Skógafoss in the South, Hraunfoss in the West, Dettifoss in the North, Svartifoss in the South-East are just some of the many beautiful waterfalls Iceland has to offer. Use your time in Iceland wisely and visit some of these amazing sights.
8. MEET THE GIANTS OF THE OCEANS
Whale watching is a popular activity in Iceland all year round. From Reykjavik’s old harbour, you can take a tour where expert guides will tell you about these beautiful animals while you try to spot them in the open sea. Sailing close to one of these giants is possibly one of the best experiences you will ever live.
9. EXCITING EVENTS
Despite the isolation, some great events are always happening in Iceland. Concerts, art openings, sport events, culture events, film festivals…there is alwanys something for everbody in Iceland in every season!
10. MEET THE LOCALS
Iceland is not only about the nature, it is also about the people. You can join the Icelanders in one of the many cafes downtown Reykjavik, or at one of the public swimming pools, or maybe in a pub downtown during happy-hour. If you are lucky enough to be in Reykjavik over a weekend, make sure you experience the wild Icelandic night life! It will be something you will never forget!
So if you want to break your journey, an Iceland Stopover is a great idea to try something different and explore Iceland, a country like no other.
Fun and happiness are guaranteed!
