The tour will start in the morning when we will pick you up from your hotel in Reykjavik. Then we will be driving South to visit one of the most beautiful lava tunnels in Iceland. The Raufarhólshellir lava tunnel it's known for the abundance of the colors of different minerals that builds the walls of the tunnel and for the shining wall bacteria living in the cave. You will enjoy the walk inside the tunnel for approximately 1 hour during which our knowledgeable guide will tell you all curiosities about lava and volcanism in Iceland. Don't forget to bring your camera as you will be amazed by all the colors of the minerals and rock formations.
The next highlight of the tour will be the true geological wonder the UNESCO Reykjanes Geopark - one of the few places in the world where the Mid-Atlantic Ridge is visible above sea level - the other being the Thingvellir National Park. In the geopark, we will enjoy the view on two beautiful geothermal lakes, Kleifarvatn and Grænavatn. They are not far from each other but with completely different appearance. Kleifarvatn is a serene body of water where no river flows being seen whereas Graenavatn is a turquoise gem reflecting the glory of the Icelandic nature. You will see the abundance in colors and shades at Krýsuvík and its surrounding hills.
Reykjanes Peninsula is also famous for its geothermal areas of Seltún and Gunnuhver which will be our next stops. Seltun Geothermal Fields is a starting point of a popular local hiking trail. The sulphuric smell, the rich colors, and the boiling mud pools demonstrate the energetic power that Iceland owns. Gunnuhver Geothermal Fields, on the other hand, look very different. It produces a huge steam constantly that rises up to the sky from the depth of the earth. The massive white steam is always the first thing to catch our attention upon driving there.
Then we will visit one of the oldest lighthouses in Iceland - the Reykjanesviti and the nearby basalt cliffs. The beautiful white lighthouse is located close to Gunnuhver Geothermal Fields, sometimes we can even see it through the steamy clouds. It only takes several minutes to walk up the hill to reach the lighthouse itself. The panoramic view of the area is spectacular.
After making some photographs of the basalt cliffs, we will have a walk on the Bridge Between Continents, standing between the North American and the European tectonic plates. Have you ever had a chance to walk between two continents?
