Continuing to the powerful Skógafoss, ascend the staircase for breathtaking South Coast views, enhanced by radiant rainbows on sunny days.
As we traverse past the renowned Eyjafjallajökull glacier, infamous for its 2010 eruption, we offer a close encounter with the stunning Sólheimajökull Glacier Tongue, showcasing a spectrum of ice colors. Drift along Road 1, where you'll sense the mystical power of the elves at Drangar and explore the dramatic cliffs of Dyrholaey. Our journey unfolds on the black sands of Reynisfjara, leading to Vik, a picturesque fishing village near a famous and formidable volcano.
After a delightful lunch, we head southeast, making a scenic stop at the captivating Fjadrargljufur canyon. The drive through Iceland's diverse landscapes unveils lava fields, sand deserts, and glacier tongues, culminating in a restful night at our 3-star hotel in Skaftafell. Modern rooms with private facilities await, and while dinner is not included, we highly recommend the hotel's dining experience.
Day two commences with breakfast at the hotel, before we head off to catch the morning light at the breathtaking Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon. Marvel at floating icebergs of various shapes and sizes before exploring the unique hues of Diamond Beach. Choose a boat ride in summer or an ice cave tour in winter for an added thrill.
Our journey continues to the picturesque Fjallsárlón, a mini Glacier Lagoon with fewer visitors and charming icebergs. Drive past Vatnajökull, capturing the perfect light for stunning photos of Svinafellsjökull glacier tongue. Return to Skaftafell for a possible short hike to Svartifoss, surrounded by dark lava columns. Time permitting, explore unique attractions like the old turf church near Hof and the Viking house in Kirkjubaejarklaustur.
Admire Systrafoss, the sister’s waterfall, near Kirkjubaejarklaustur, and proceed with a tranquil drive along Hjorleifshofdi, a settlement founded by one of the first Vikings. Passing through Vik, revisit the sights in a different light, granting photo opportunities. Conclude the adventure with a visit to Urridafoss in Thjorsá river, returning to Reykjavik in time for a refreshing evening and a delightful dinner at one of the city's many restaurants.
